Chapter 17

Sarah ducked in response to the gunfire. She’d heard it so many times in her life, she knew exactly what it was.

“Parkman, get the car.” She handed him her nearly full coffee cup. “Meet me over there.”

The traffic cop was just getting back to his feet. He had stumbled when the woman fired her weapon. She still held it low at her waist, almost out of sight to passing cars.

They were talking. The officer was by the hood of his car now, his hands raised to his shoulders.

Sarah reached the edge of the parking lot. Thick grass and a low ditch separated her from the parked vehicles at the side of the road. She was close enough that if she yelled, they would hear her, but she didn’t want to startle the woman.

“Keys,” the woman shouted.

She wanted the cop to hand over his keys so he couldn’t follow her. That was a short-term fix. There would be a BOLO on her vehicle seconds after she pulled away from the curb. Sarah expected to hear sirens at any moment. Like Parkman said, dispatch would have all of the woman’s information. This wasn’t going to end well for her.

Although, Sarah had to stop her from shooting a cop.

“Give them to me,” the woman shouted, her free hand held out, palm up.

All the cop had to do was grab her wrist and yank her off balance enough to dislodge the weapon. Sure it was risky, but there was a high chance of success for a woman who appeared to be an amateur at this.

Sarah slowed at the small incline near the shoulder of the road. Fifteen feet away she caught Parkman in the rental easing up behind the cop car. He stopped twenty feet back.

She raised her hands out to the side and cleared her throat. The woman’s head snapped her way, saw her, then snapped back at the cop. She retreated a couple of steps from the officer.

“Are you okay, Officer?” Sarah asked.

He nodded three rapid times. Probably was shitting his pants and couldn’t find his voice, which was understandable.

“Not your problem,” the woman shouted at her.

“That’s where you’re wrong,” Sarah said, advancing closer, slow step by slow step.

“How’s that?” The woman asked, her eyes not leaving the OPP officer.

Two pickup trucks drove by, followed by a small hatchback. Sarah waited for them to pass, then stepped within ten feet of the woman’s car.

“See that man in the parked car behind the cruiser?”

The woman edged to the right to glance around the officer.

“Yeah. So?”

“He’s called every law enforcement agency this side of Toronto. We watched you get pulled over from the coffee shop window.”

“That was you?” This time the woman glanced at her, paused, then turned back to the cop. “Holy shit,” she muttered under her breath.

“Holy shit what?”

“You’re …”

“I’m what?” She figured stalling was a good tactic, but there were several problems with it. Parkman hadn’t called anyone. And this officer’s colleagues would be coming soon and Sarah didn’t want to be detained again.
